Downtown Raleigh Historic

The Dr. Peter H. Williams House is a late 19th Century Queen Anne style home located in the Prince Hall Historic District in Downtown Raleigh.

The building had fallen into disrepair, suffered tornado damage in 2011 and was left vacant. This project involved the restoration or reinstatement of many historic features of the home, as well as a substantial addition.

The livable floor area was more than doubled, allowing the building to be brought back to life as a pair of apartments. Requiring a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission, the project had to be sensitive to the local context. The addition was designed to be minimally visible from the street while maximizing the use of the interior volumes. Sightlines and roof forms were carefully analyzed and tested during the early stages of design.
